First night in Paris.

We reached Paris at 8:00pm via the Euro rail on the 24th of May 2010 which was a Monday. (It is a good idea to book a taxi from the Grande Nord Station to the destination in Paris in advance i.e. before reaching Paris); I made reservation from UK beforehand. G7 is the largest and reliable taxi service in Paris. There contact number is 00 33 1 47390091 and their website is http://www.taxis-g7.com. Make sure to decide on a price (which should be not more that 45 Euros, depending on how far the place is and exact meeting place and coordinating time as in my case I forgot to do that hence we were unable to locate our taxi, therefore had to get go on this taxi van which the driver stated as limousine thus charging us a 100 Euros, which was the worst. But after that experience we were pretty much smart when it came to dealing with taxis. But do remember the Metro (trains), public buses are all accessible, please check out the bus and train maps at http://parisbytrain.com/map-paris-wheelchair-reduced-mobility-accessibility-metro-rer-bus-tram,) if one has done their homework on travelling in Paris via metro and bus, it is dead cheap, convenient as it goes everywhere in Paris and metro is fast so one gets to places without facing traffic unlike using buses and taxis.
Anyway, our hotel was in La Défense the major business district in Paris known as the Renaissance Paris La Defense Hotel which is a bit far away from the main town centre but as it is a newly developed business area its fully wheelchair accessible. Although being a modern development but still the skyline is like a sketch on canvas. The district is at the western edge of Paris' historical area, which begins at the Louvre in Central Paris and continues along the Champs-Élysées, well beyond the Arc de Triomphe before concluding at La Défense. It consists of many beautifully designed skyscrapers including a Grande Arche de la Défens which was built in 1982 and completed in 1989, the arch holds may business offices and is a breathtaking monument. It is an extreme contemporary work of art and magnificently stands itself in the centre of a busy city district. It also has a big shopping centre know as Les Quatre Temps, it’s really big and has many shops, restaurants, fast food kiosks and ice cream parlours. It’s a typical shopping area where shopaholics can enjoy a whole day. La Defense is easily accessible as they have a huge promenade and below are the bus and metro station which all have lifts to go downstairs.
After reaching our hotel and settling down our luggage we went out for a stroll outside. As it was summer the days were long, and the nights were warm, we were a bit peckish, hence went out to browse the area around and also buy something to eat. Well outside it was beautiful, we all took loads of pictures, and had Mc Donald’s, which was easy and quick and all of us were dead tired.

Paris on Wheels.

Although I have been to Paris twice before but I was able to walk. This was my first time using a wheelchair and I was a bit worried about it as Paris with its beautiful cobbled streets, gorgeous stone steps and romantic historical buildings, it was all tricky at first but we managed in the end. Thank God! my sister was with me; bless her as she was pushing me around and it was surely hard work pushing a huge wheelchair on cobbled grounds and off and on pavements and everything. Although it sounds annoying, but France being part of the EU has to be fully wheelchair accessible and trust me the French are doing their best in-fact all the new developments even the centre of Paris like the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, Champs Elysees, Eiffel Tower are all wheelchair accessible but please make sure to have a manual one as one of those smart, nifty, motorised ones (the one I use) would just fall apart as the pathways are too bumpy.
It is so true that Paris is amazing, as told by Deschamps, Eustache ‘Rien ne se peut comparer a Paris' meaning ‘Nothing can compare to Paris’. Paris is a city that never sleeps, so enjoy it as much as you can. It is the city of lights, love, food, culture, freedom and arts. As quoted by Friedrich Nietzsche “An artist has no home in Europe except in Paris” (He was a German classical Scholar, Philosopher and Critic of culture, 1844-1900).

A bit about me.

My name is Nadia and the weather in England it 25 degrees Celsius, is lovely out here. Today I shall be introducing myself to the world. Gosh I feel like a spec of grain on the face of the earth. Anyways, so one of my better potentials is writing. As being a child I was a huge fan of Roald Dahl. Since I remember, even now, my approach to explaining encounters, problems and experiences has been very intriguing. I do have a very attractive, exciting and curious way of telling stories to people.
Unfortunately due to my career I have only been able to write research papers and ever really got the chance to explore my writing in a informal dramatic fashion. Now after my graduation, spend endless time in search of work, filling in job applications but uptill now no luck. Hence I thought why not do something which I love doing, and that is travelling. And now that I am on a wheelchair it makes my experiences more exciting ad dramatic. Its like begin to work on ma research paper. I have to do heaps of research before going on a vacation its more like a expedition. I have to ensure that where ever I am travelling is wheelchair accessible like the trains, hotels, museums, etc. Very knowledgeable I must say.
Anyway, therefore I thought of writing and sharing my experiences. My friend advised me is to start writing blogs. Wasnt really sure about this as there are way too many blogs all over the internet and mine would be unseen. But after looking into the whole situation I felt might as well give it a shot. Then after browsing the internet I came across blogger.com where I decided to begin my blog and here I am.
Please do read my blog and feel free to comment on it.

Thankyou.

Travelling the World on Wheels.

When I was young I always use to say when I grow up I shall marry a pilot, so that I can travel the world. I have a passion for travelling, but unfortunately due to my disability I can no longer walk on my own. Yes! I have to use a wheel chair, it has been 5 years now. Well when it happened I was devastated, all my dreams for travelling the world and visiting exotic places were shattered.
But soon after I realised that when there is a will there is a way. Now I had decided that I just had to be strong willed. After finishing my University in UK, I decided to stay here. As for me I hadn’t forgotten my passion. No way! I was persistent on figuring out ways to travel whilst being stranded on a wheelchair. And eureka! we are in the twenty first century, the World’s politicians, economist, presidents, leaders everybody is talking about ‘equality and diversity’. According to many laws and regulation around the world many countries have to comply with having wheel chair accessibility in all most every where, e.g. roads, streets, public toilets, buildings, houses, etc.
Anyway, after all my research and contacting people through email around the world I got hold of a few places where one could easily go about in a wheelchair, but this was way back in 2007. I decided to go to Spain, Barcelona (my very first trip on a wheelchair) the air ticket was affordable, public buses were free for disabled people and most of the train stations, shopping centres and sight seeing were accessible for wheelchair users. I had a fabulous time in Barcelona.
I would love to share my travelling experiences with the world, and being on a wheelchair makes it even more challenging and exciting. And I'd also like others to share their wonderful travel experiences as well, and that is why I formed this group. Please, I do need your help to keep it going.

People who have a passion for travelling the World and would like to share there experiences with everybody, please contact me. Many thanks.
